How to create the illusion of a bigger room

We aren’t always able to bust out a wall or do a complete renovation. But we all want the illusion and the idea of more space and a larger home essentially. I have some ideas on how you can make that happen without any demo involved!

First of all, use one cohesive flooring material throughout the main spaces of your home. When you change up the flooring from carpet to tile to wood all in one great room, things get choppy. This creates your eye to stop moving and essentially feeling smaller. Use all tile or all wood for your entry, living room, dining room, kitchen, hallway etc. I promise this creates the illusion of a much larger space.

Secondly, hang your curtains high and wide! When you do this your eye is able to keep going up, which makes your space feel larger than it really is. When doing this though, you will have to order your curtains instead of buying them in store. Usually the curtains in store are only 8’ long unless you get lucky.

Thirdly, buy large art. When you use one large piece of art over three or five smaller pieces, it appear less busy and overall larger in scale. Don’t get me wrong I love a good gallery wall. Just not on every wall in every room. 😉
