How to Mix Wood Tones Throughout Your Home
Let me guess, you have more than one wood color in your home right now.
Am I right? Between the flooring, millwork, and furniture, I’m guessing you have 3-4 wood tones going on. And while that is okay, they do need to be the right color to work for you in your home.
I have some hard and fast rules when it comes to woods. You should and will have more than one wood color in your home and that is great! Adding interest and contrast is great when it comes to making your home your own. Below are some tips and tricks for when you find yourself in this predicament.
The first step is to establish a dominant tone. Choose your main wood tone and then use that for each decision going forward. Use that wood tone for your larger or more prominent pieces of furniture or flooring or cabinetry. This will provide a sense of cohesion and balance throughout your home.
Going forward, you will always come back to your prominent wood tone that you’ve been using. Make sure they “go”. The main way to know if they will “go” is the undertone in each wood. There are cool and warm undertones so you need to make sure your all of the wood elements in your home have the same undertone! The wood options below are all considered to have warm undertones. They are cohesive with one another and you can see if you’d have one as a wood floor, any of the others would be great as furniture or cabinetry throughout the home.
And these below, are all considered to have a cool undertone. Again, these are also cohesive with one another.
Some wood flooring will have color variations. If you like the look, embrace those different colors through the wood floor. Use those different color tones when adding in cabinetry and furniture. This will help you if you aren’t sure it will all “go”.
Lastly, repeat the tones. Repeating a wood tone in small accents, like picture frames, decorative bowls, or light fixtures, can help create consistency and cohesiveness throughout your home.
Now, you got this, don’t be afraid. Mixing wood tones can create a unique and inviting atmosphere in your home when done thoughtfully.
