How to Install Wallpaper

Are you ready to make a splash in your home?

Wallpaper makes a statement, and I love making a statement in the homes I design. Adding wallpaper adds some personality to any space! Don’t be scared when you think of wallpaper. My mom had that ugly fruit border also. 😜

There are multiple types of wallpaper. So when purchasing make sure you know what you’re ordering. I have installed peel and stick as well as the glue on.

*Glue — If you have a glue on wallpaper, you need the glue. Make sure you read the directions. Some has to sit on the wallpaper a little before installation and some you fold the wallpaper onto itself to activate the glue. So be sure to read!

*Foam Paint Roller — If you did select a glue on wallpaper, you will use a foam roller to roll the glue onto the wallpaper. Make sure there isn’t any debris on your roller or glue otherwise it will possibly show through your wallpaper. When rolling onto the wallpaper, make sure you get every inch of the paper for the best results.

*Scraper — You will use a scraper with both peel and stick and glue on wallpaper. Make sure it’s plastic so it doesn’t rip the paper. You want to make sure there are no bubbles anywhere under the paper. If you are using peel and stick wallpaper and you have a bubble, you will have to completely take the wallpaper off and try again. If you have glue on wallpaper, you can usually push the bubble out to the edge and be just fine. Make sure you push the wallpaper firmly on the edges and in any corners so it sticks.

*Tape Measure — You will need to measure you walls, and then use that measurement to measure the wallpaper where you need to cut it. I always add 1-2” to your number so you have a little room for error.

*Scissors — Unless your wallpaper is custom made for your space, it will come in one long roll. You will need to cut it into pieces based on your measurements of the wall.

*Utility Knife — Remember I said I always add 1-2” so you have room for error once you put the paper on the wall? You will then use your utility knife to cut off the extras. This happens usually on the floor and ceiling, and then at the end of the wall.

*Ladder/Step Stool — Depending on your ceiling height you’ll need a step stool or ladder to make sure you get your paper straight and all the way to the ceiling.

And obviously with any wallpaper project, you need wallpaper! What I’ve always done, is select the pattern and color of wallpaper over which installation method it will be. BUT if you are super nervous over one or anything, only search the type of paper you are comfortable installing. There are SO many selections out there, I know you will find one you love!

Good luck! 😉
