Viral Dining Table

When you never thought you’d go viral

A friend texted me the next day, “Chelsea, your table is breaking the internet!” 😂

I never expected to go viral that day in June, but it certainly made for an exciting couple of days. As an Instagram user, many dream of experiencing that level of attention. While it was thrilling in the moment, I've come to realize that going viral isn't the ultimate goal when it comes to using Instagram for marketing. It did significantly boost my following. Initially, I had around 4,000 followers, and now I have over 100,000 followers. This led to some amazing collaborations. However, ultimately, it didn't translate into substantial growth for my design business as one might expect.

This photo captures my dining room from about 2 years ago. While I appreciate the look in the picture, I felt the urge for a change, especially since my table had a sizable chunk taken out of its top thanks to my kids being kids, haha. Considering the table's $300 price tag six years ago, I decided to embark on a DIY project to give this space a makeover.

Seeing epoxy products used for countertop renovations on social media intrigued me, especially as a budget-friendly alternative. So, I thought, why not try it on my dining table? Instead of purchasing a whole kit, I opted to buy just the top coat of epoxy and used leftover paint I had at home.

Being a fan of moody interiors, I chose black paint and added white marble veining spray paint to mimic the look of marble. After applying the black paint and marble veins, I coated it with epoxy. From a distance, it's easy to mistake it for real marble. However, up close, there are some imperfections. Nevertheless, the epoxy top coat has provided excellent protection for the table surface. For my first attempt with this product, I'm quite pleased with the result. It'll be hard to part with it when we eventually decide to upgrade to a new dining table.

If you missed the viral reel, take a look here! And check back for more DIY projects in the future. :)
