My Favorite Power Tools
They really aren’t as intimidating as you think. 😉
When my husband and I were first married, he would execute all of the DIY projects. He has a construction background and I had very little kids after a couple years. It just made sense that he did that. And he enjoyed doing it.
It wasn’t until years later when his day job just got too full and he needed to work more on the nights and weekends, that I got sick of waiting for him to complete my honey-do list, that I decided to give it a try. I had to gain a little confidence by trial and error, but I always knew I had him and YouTube to fall back on. 😉
I’m going to break down my favorite power tools for you here. Just a disclaimer here, I’m not a professional carpenter, I make mistakes all the time and you might too once in awhile. Also, another disclaimer, please be wearing the proper shoes and clothes; as well as eye protection. I’m not responsible for any accidents that may happen.
*Table Saw — Your table saw will get used quite a bit when working on any DIY project. This saw is stationary and will need to sit on a table. Please make sure you know the proper safety features for when this is not in use. This type of saw typically will only cut boards that are 12” deep, if you have a panel of something you’d need a different saw so keep that in mind. The table saw will make you quick trim cuts and is used with doing board and batten or installing base or window trim.
*Circular Saw — Here is the other saw you could find yourself needing. This is used when cutting larger pieces of wood or wall panels. This type of saw isn’t stationary and you will need some sawhorses or something to lay your boards on. You will be moving when using this saw so make sure you are comfortable and read the instructions for when using this saw.
*Electric Nail Gun — This is perfect for adding board and batten, shiplap, or any kind of millwork at all. Electric nail guns run off a battery so there are no cords to get in your way. You do need to make sure you have the right size of nails loaded and also know the proper way to load them.
*Cordless Drill — One of my favorite things! I use my drill all the time. When putting together furniture or when doing a DIY, this get’s pulled out! You will use this in multiple areas of your life and home. You can use this to make holes for your screws to go. You use the same size as your screw, drill bit, put it in the drill and make a hole. Then you’d take the drill bit out, and replace it with a screwdriver bit. There are so many sizes of drill bits, as well as screwdriver bits. You will change them out when needed and what is necessary for your project.
*Drill and Driver Bit Set — This will be needed when using your drill. Sometimes these will come with your drill but not all the shapes and sizes.
*Hammer — Because, duh? This will be needed with hanging up a light weight picture for example. You’ll use it,
I just know it.
*Level — This is essential when hanging anything. The worst thing is going through time and effort to do something and it turns out not level! There are multiple sizes of levels. This is a great in between for most projects.
*Working Gloves — These are maybe not always necessary but they are helpful to protect your hands.
*Eye Protection Glasses — These should be a nonnegotiable when using power tools. Believe me, wood and dust fly. This a simple move to make sure nobody gets hurt.
With all of these you will need nails or screws depending on your project. These come in all different shapes and sizes to be sure to research which size/shape is best for what you are planning to do.
HAPPY DIYING! 😃
