Garage Makeover

I’ve hated our garage since we moved in…it was time for an upgrade!

I’m embarrassed to even share this! This was our disaster of a garage until recently. We have a mudroom, but it is smaller and with a family of 6 we needed more organized space for all the things. It’s really been a trial and error for what works for our family so don’t feel bad if you don’t get it right for your family immediately.

I got our my pen and paper and put my idea on paper!

I had purchased a bookshelf and a cube storage bench, both from IKEA, to storage shoes and all the things for the kiddos.

As for the walls, well they needed help and the easiest solution for me was shiplap panels. They come 4’x8’ so take up a decent amount of space. I only needed two and a half for this space. I’m hoping to continue but that’ll be for another day. I also added a trim board on top of the panel to make it complete. This wasn’t perfect my any means. I cut a couple areas too short but we’re just going for it here. I’m not a perfectionist…and I’m okay with it.

For above the panels, I opted for joint compound. I originally was hoping to just paint the top portion but since the construction tape was super visable and rough to the touch this help camauflage that. For this step I added a little paint I had on hand to the joint compound in a bucket and mixed it with my drill and a grout mixer. This is a messy process, so wear old clothes and cover anything of value.

I used a plastic trowel/scraper to put it on the walls. There isn’t a rhyme or reason really to placing it on the walls, I just used short strokes and kept adding until it was covered. I didn’t care if there was some clumps or bumps so I left those. Adds texture :) I will probably have to do more than one coat as you can see the construction tape showing through.

I also NEEDED to paint that door. It was absolutely disgusting. All the paint I’ve used has been from my garage!

I knew I wanted this little corner to feel more like the inside of my house so I knew I need some decor or something. I was gifted these letters from @12timbers and am in LOVE! This was a custom quote they made for me, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with out it turned out.

I added some hooks for bags and coats when winter hits...

My last step is to style the space a little bit. Since I’m wanting this small corner to feel more like the inside of my home, I want to add some personal touches and some greenery. This definitely does the trick! I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!

Someday we’ll do something with the ceiling maybe and get the floors done, but for now this works great! :)
