Why I Select Paint Colors Last
I know it feels backwards to you…
Let’s talk about the flexibility. There are SO many paint colors available out there. It is easier to find a paint color that complements or enhances the other elements in a room than it is to find furnishings or textiles to match a specific paint color. It's generally easier to match paint to furniture, fabrics, and accessories than the other way around. Paint colors can be adjusted more easily than reupholstering furniture or replacing major decor elements.
Another reason why paint is selected at the end is because of lighting. Which this is a whole other topic in my opinion… Natural and artificial lighting can significantly affect how colors appear. Sometimes it’s better to wait until they can see how the natural light in a space interacts with the other design elements before finalizing the paint color.
The overall design concept sometimes does evolve as the the homeowner and I select furniture, fabrics, and accessories. The paint color can then be chosen to complement and enhance the final design vision. Paint color choices are often influenced by the desired mood or atmosphere of a space. Once the overall aesthetic is established through furniture and decor choices, it becomes easier to select a paint color that enhances the intended atmosphere.
I know it’s hard, but trust the process. 😉
